This is a true example of a current breeder, who uses pyramid sales to make money from these dogs.

Breeder Bob, sold Purchaser John a female Mastiff - Sally.

It was Purchaser John's first Mastiff, and he was given a great sales pitch about how these were the best dogs to be had. Purchaser John was talked into showing the dog, (all entry fees at the Purchasers expense). It was part of the contract that Sally had to be shown until she achieved her championship. Purchaser John paid the full going rate for Sally, but didn't get full ownership - Breeder Bob remained as a co-owner. Purchaser John also agreed that when Sally was bred, then Breeder Bob would get 30% of the profits from the litter in either puppies or cash.

When it came time to breed Sally, Breeder Bob offered his own stud dog, and charged Purchaser John full price for the stud fee. Sally whelped a lovely litter of 10 puppies. Purchaser John had to deal with all sorts of problems - Mom became ill, so puppies had to be bottle fed, every 3 hours, around the clock, 24/7. Puppies had to be kept clean, socialized, let outside, weaned, etc. Lots and lots of time - but not factored into the expenses by Breeder Bob.

Let's do the math here.

Purchaser John pays Breeder Bob:
$2,500.00 for Sally
$5,100.00 for 30% of profits after expenses
$2,500.00 for stud fee
Total $10,100.00

Purchaser John could have bought Sally from any other breeder - free and clear for $2,500.00. Despite the fact that Breeder Bob was also co-owner of the stud dog, he charged Purchaser John a full stud fee - it should have been 2/3's. Purchaser John had all the expenses of showing Sally - entry fees, travel, etc. And Purchaser John did all the work with the litter - an incredibly time-consuming job, while Breeder Bob did nothing and got money for it!

What it boils down to is that Purchaser John paid $10,100.00 for Sally or paid $7,600.00 extra for Sally.  He could have gotten a Mastiff of equal quality for $2,500.00 from many breeders in Canada, had he taken the time to look..
Here's a second scenario - and again, true of a breeder in Canada right now.

Breeder Sue gave Purchaser Jane a female Mastiff, which also had to be shown to its' championship - Mary.

When it came time to breed, Breeder Sue offered her stud dog .

Mary had 11 puppies, and Breeder Sue got 10 of them. Mary's next litter had 6 puppies, and Breeder Sue got 4 of them.

Out of one dog - Mary - Breeder Sue had no responsibility in raising puppies, caring for Mary, or show expenses. Breeder Sue made $35,000.00 on the puppies she got back.

Purchaser Jane could have spent $2,500.00 for a Mastiff of equal quality, from many breeders in Canada, had she taken the time to look.. Her only expenses would have been stud fees, and expenses incurred with the litter, and showing.
Following is a page from an actual contract that a pet owner shared with me. Their dog was purchased as a pet, but if they ever changed their mind and wanted to start breeding these were the requirements.

NON-BREEDING - Additional Terms This non-breeding contract may be lifted, at the breeder's discretion, at such time as the buyer has fulfilled all the terms of this contract and the breeder feels that the use of this dog/bitch in a breeding program - will be an asset to the Mastiff breed.

***NOTES***

1. The breeder's dogs don't have a championship! Quite often in this kennel, the mother doesn't have a championship and sometimes neither parent has a championship!

2. Reasonable.

3. The breeder's dogs don't have this much testing done on them! Just ask for copies from both parents!

4. FEMALE: You've just paid full price for the bitch, and now you will have to pay full price again! You are paying double the going rate for your dog! - $5,000.00
MALE: You've just paid full price for your male, and now you will pay full price 3 more times! You are paying quadruple the going rate for your dog! - $10,000.00 + see below.

5. WHAT?!?!?!?!? Are you kidding me!?!?!?!?!? YOU pay for the collection and all the charges!?!?!?!? The semen plus extender is $475.00 plus shipping charges x 3 = $1,425.00, for a grand total of: $11,425.00 ! Look closely at what you are doing! If you're not sure - then ask other breeders!
